About Us
Locating to South Africa:Originally from Southern England, we moved to the North Coast of Kwa-Zulu Natal (KZN), South Africa 5 years ago. After breeding and successfully showing Newfoundlands in the UK for 20+ years, culminating in Best of Breed at Crufts and Group 2 (a first for the breed in the UK at that time) we came to South Africa with our “oldies”, a retired Champion Newfoundland and a middle aged Rottweiler who had previously worked with the us for the UK police force. The sugar cane farmAfter a settling in period, we moved out of town to a rural sugar cane farm with 600 acres of rolling cane and 4-5 acres of garden and it seemed a shame to waste all that space, so we started our search for another suitable dog for this sometimes extreme environment. It gets very, very hot and humid in this area of KZN, so long coated breeds were out of the question. Also being sub-tropical, the bugs are “supersized” so any dog needed to be hardy and resistant. Then there is always the crime situation, so a dog capable of protection would come in useful too! There was only one dog that fitted the bill – yes, you've guessed it THE BOERBOEL. The boerboel Bob joins our family:After an aborted attempt to buy from a breeder, we came across, quite by accident, a litter with one remaining male being sold by a local farmer in Stanger, KZN bred from his two working farm guard dogs. So the story began and Bob joined our family. Since then our lives have revolved around the breed with research, study of breed genetics, Boerboel bloodlines and using all our previous knowledge and experience, we put together over a 5 year period 3 different bitches from 3 very different Boerboel bloodlines to found our own particular line of future Boerboels. Each dog was selected for it's particular strength from well-known bloodlines in South Africa after visiting and speaking to many, many Boerboel breeders. No puppies were bred during this time, we just didn’t know enough to feel confident about bringing a new generation of Boerboels into the world and besides, what’s the hurry? There are two ways to do things: Quickly or properly, and we chose the latter. A dog fit for the purpose:Our name Quo Vadis translated from the Latin means “where to from here?” We know where we intend to go, the road is a long one, but we have made the first step towards a healthier, stable, working bred Boerboel dog. A dog fit for purpose, whatever the purpose. We know our dogs:Unlike some other Boerboel breeders, we know our dogs through and through and will make recommendations for each litter we breed. We breed for a purpose and we know why we breed each litter of Boerboel puppies and what we hope to achieve by each breeding. Some will be more suited as out and out working dogs and may not be suitable for a sedentary pet home, others may be more suitable. We will tell you this and thoroughly research your needs and preferences before we let you take one of our dogs into your life. We are here for the long haul and have many goals to strive for. Buying a Boerboel puppy from us means entering into a partnership for at least the life of the dog. We have made the commitment to this special breed, we hope you will do the same. |
